Kojima Productions faced one of the most difficult moments in its independent history when Sony unexpectedly decided to withdraw from Physint, the ambitious espionage project announced in 2024. Speaking in a recent interview, Hideo Kojima revealed that the decision was communicated during a June meeting and came as a major shock. With nearly 200 employees working at the Tokyo-based studio, the veteran creator immediately began considering the financial consequences for the company and how the project could survive without PlayStation’s backing.
Rather than abandoning Physint, Kojima chose to continue development while searching for another publishing partner. The studio had already recruited developers specifically for the game, while its production plans included storyboards, early 3D assets and scans of actors such as Bill Skarsgard. No employees were dismissed following Sony’s withdrawal. Instead, several team members were temporarily moved to OD, Kojima Productions’ upcoming horror project with Xbox, while a smaller group continued working on Physint.
Microsoft eventually stepped in as the project’s new publisher, extending an existing relationship with Kojima Productions. Kojima explained that discussions with Xbox progressed quickly, allowing the studio to secure the future of Physint without abandoning years of preparation. Sony, according to Kojima, did not provide him with a clear explanation for its decision. Reports have suggested concerns surrounding costs, production schedules and commercial expectations, claims that Kojima Productions has publicly challenged.
Despite the sudden change, Kojima insists that his relationship with Sony remains positive. For him, Physint carries particular importance as Kojima Productions celebrates its tenth anniversary and the director marks four decades in the video game industry. The experience has also reinforced his concerns about the growing financial risks surrounding major productions and independent studios. Kojima believes developers must continue defending creative experimentation if the industry wants to avoid becoming increasingly dependent on a small number of predictable blockbuster franchises.
