How I Became King by Eating Monsters Anime Set for 2027

WHITE FOX is preparing a new fantasy anime for 2027 with a television adaptation of How I Became King by Eating Monsters, the light novel series written by Daken and illustrated by Shiba. The project was officially announced on October 9, 2026, confirming that the unusual monster-hunting story will make the jump to animation next year. To celebrate the announcement, original illustrator Shiba and manga artist Karin Suzuragi also released special commemorative illustrations. Additional details regarding the broadcast schedule, voice cast and production staff have not yet been revealed.

The story follows Mars, the twelve-year-old first prince of the Kingdom of Farune, whose privileged position hides an extremely dangerous reality. Surrounded by assassination plots and faced with the constant threat of poisoned meals, the young prince secretly leaves the castle in search of food. His destination is a forest filled with monsters, where he begins hunting creatures simply to survive. His situation changes dramatically after meeting a mysterious red-haired swordswoman who recognizes his potential and offers to train him. Mars soon discovers that consuming monster meat can actually increase his strength.

What begins as a desperate struggle for survival gradually develops into a much larger adventure involving political conspiracies, military conflicts and battles capable of affecting entire nations. Mars' growing abilities allow him to confront threats that would normally be impossible for a child of his age, while his position as a prince places him directly at the center of increasingly dangerous power struggles. The combination of fantasy combat, royal intrigue and an unconventional progression system gives the series its distinctive identity.

Daken originally launched the story on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō platform in January 2022. Micro Magazine later began publishing the light novel under its GCN Bunko label in September 2023, with artwork by Shiba. The seventh Japanese volume is scheduled for release on October 20, 2026, while Cross Infinite World is publishing the series in English and released its sixth digital volume on September 30. A manga adaptation illustrated by Karin Suzuragi began serialization in Young Animal Zero in January 2024, with its third collected volume scheduled to arrive on October 29.
