Bungie is entering a new phase as the studio seeks to rebuild confidence among its players and redefine the future of its two major franchises. In a message published on September 17, 2026, studio head Poria Torkan and Marathon general manager Josh Deane acknowledged that recent years have damaged the relationship between Bungie and its community. The new leadership team says its priority is now to focus development around player expectations, improve communication and demonstrate progress through concrete releases rather than promises.

Destiny will remain central to Bungie's long-term strategy. The studio confirmed that it is not abandoning the franchise following the final major Destiny 2 content update, Monuments of Triumph. Bungie now plans to restore several campaigns, destinations and raids that were previously removed from Destiny 2 and place them back into the game for all players. The process will require substantial redevelopment, as older content must be adapted to the technical and gameplay changes introduced since Beyond Light. Lighting, enemy encounters, combat systems and other elements will therefore need to be modernized before returning.

Marathon will also undergo significant changes after failing to reach the audience Bungie initially expected, despite receiving positive critical feedback. Rather than abandoning the project, the studio intends to expand its survival mechanics and move beyond the restrictions of its original genre positioning. Future updates will place greater emphasis on player freedom, allowing different approaches through cooperative PvE, competitive PvP and PvPvE experiences. The October Nightfall Refresh and the Symbiosis update scheduled for December will be important steps in that evolution.

More broadly, Bungie says it has reorganized its internal priorities and development processes. Decision-making is being moved closer to individual game teams, while player satisfaction will carry greater weight when measuring success. The studio also promises more transparency regarding development priorities and future changes. Bungie's leadership acknowledges that rebuilding its reputation will require time, and that the real test will be whether these internal changes translate into stronger games, clearer communication and a more consistent relationship with its community.
