Director Zach Cregger is making no secret of his ambitions for the upcoming Resident Evil movie. A newly released behind-the-scenes video offers a closer look at how the filmmaker has transformed his long-standing passion for Capcom’s survival horror franchise into a cinematic experience designed to feel familiar to players without simply reproducing the games.

The story follows Brian, a young man working as a medical supply courier, who receives what initially appears to be a routine delivery assignment. His destination is a hospital located in Raccoon City, but the job quickly turns into a night of horror and survival. Austin Abrams, known for Weapons, takes on the lead role as Brian, whose journey will force him through a series of increasingly dangerous environments.

Cregger’s connection to Resident Evil goes far beyond casual fandom. The director says he has completed Resident Evil 4 around 100 times and is already replaying Resident Evil Requiem, released in February 2026. That experience directly influenced the movie’s structure. According to Cregger, Brian’s surroundings will evolve roughly every seven or eight minutes, creating the sensation of progressing from one game area to another. His arsenal will also expand over time, beginning with a handgun before moving to weapons such as a shotgun and eventually a machine gun.

Longtime players can also expect numerous visual and gameplay-inspired references. Padlocks will block certain paths, healing sprays and herbs will appear throughout the story, and even the franchise’s iconic typewriters will be scattered across different locations. Rather than functioning as simple Easter eggs, these elements appear to be part of Cregger’s effort to reproduce the rhythm and atmosphere that define Resident Evil. The movie is scheduled to open in Japanese theaters on October 9, 2026.
