Kadokawa has offered a first look at the upcoming anime adaptation of The Diary of a Middle-Aged Sage's Carefree Life in Another World, confirming that the series will make its television debut in January 2027. The newly released teaser also introduces the first member of the voice cast, with veteran actor Tomokazu Sugita taking on the role of Zelos Merlin, the powerful sage at the center of this fantasy adventure.
The story follows Satoshi Ōsako, a 40-year-old farmer and dedicated player of the virtual reality RPG Swords & Sorceries. After finally defeating the game's ultimate boss, his victory takes an unexpected turn when a final curse causes his death in the real world. Satoshi soon awakens in another world in the body of his game character, Zelos Merlin, an exceptionally powerful Great Sage. Rather than pursuing glory or conquest, however, Zelos has a far simpler ambition: to enjoy a peaceful life away from trouble. Unfortunately, dangerous forests, bandits, magical responsibilities and unexpected encounters quickly make that goal far more complicated than anticipated.
The anime is being directed by Takayuki Inagaki, known for Rosario + Vampire, at animation studio YANCHESTER. Hiroko Kanasugi is responsible for overseeing the series scripts, while Mariko Fujita is handling the character designs. With Tomokazu Sugita now confirmed as Zelos, additional cast announcements are expected as the January premiere approaches.
Created by Yasukiyo Kotobuki, the original story first appeared on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō platform in 2016 before being published as a light novel series by Kadokawa. The franchise has since expanded significantly, with multiple manga adaptations and a prequel spinoff exploring Zelos Merlin's adventures before the events of the main storyline. The main light novel series reached its 21st volume in April 2026, while the manga adaptation illustrated by Maneki published its 18th collected volume in Japan in June.
