The Gundam universe is preparing to expand once again with Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, a new animated series officially scheduled to premiere in April 2027. The project will be directed and written by Kenji Kamiyama, the filmmaker behind The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim and the acclaimed Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Combining science fiction, mecha warfare, drama and geopolitical tensions, the series is shaping up to offer a darker vision of humanity's future.

The story takes place after the arrival of an autonomous interstellar object originating from another galaxy. Its discovery provides humanity with three revolutionary technologies: gravity control, faster-than-light communication and cognitive materialization. These breakthroughs trigger an extraordinary period of expansion and prosperity across the Solar System. That golden age, however, lasts less than a decade. The mysterious object eventually spirals out of control and creates an aggressive, self-replicating ecosystem that humanity comes to call the Apocalypse.

Following three months of devastating battles around Earth's orbit, the surviving human population is forced to abandon the planet. This historic evacuation becomes the starting point of a new calendar, with humanity entering Year 1 A.A., meaning After Apocalypse. By A.A. 45, entire generations have been born on the Moon and throughout the space colonies without ever experiencing a world at peace. On the lunar surface, a young war orphan named Ray Azumi awakens, setting the stage for the next chapter of the conflict.

The production brings together several notable creators. Sunrise is credited as the original creator, while Bandai Namco Filmworks and Sola Animation are handling animation production. Science-fiction author Toh Enjoe, known for Godzilla Singular Point and The Empire of Corpses, is responsible for the world-building. Eiichi Shimizu, whose previous work includes Ultraman and Linebarrels of Iron, is designing the Gundam units. Original character concepts are provided by Stato, with Miyako Takasu overseeing character design and animation. The soundtrack will be composed by Go Shiina, known for his work on God Eater and Juni Taisen.
