The dark comedy manga Happy Kanako's Killer Life is officially heading to television with an anime adaptation scheduled to premiere in April 2027. TOHO animation confirmed the project, revealing the first details about the production team and main cast. Shinji Takamatsu, known for his work on Gintama, will direct the series at studio Drive while also supervising the scripts. Yoshiyuki Ōkubo has been appointed character designer and chief animation director.
The anime will feature Hana Tamegai as Kanako Nishino, Ryōta Suzuki as Sakurai and Junichi Suwabe as the President. The story follows Kanako, a young woman desperate to escape a job she hates. After applying for what appears to be an ordinary new position, she unexpectedly discovers that her potential employer is actually an agency specializing in contract killings. Even more surprisingly, Kanako quickly proves to have an exceptional talent for assassination despite her lack of confidence and difficulties adapting to her unusual new career.
Created by Toshiya Wakabayashi, Happy Kanako's Killer Life originally began as a four-panel web manga published through social media and pixivFANBOX before joining Seikaisha's Twi4 platform. The Japanese publisher released the ninth collected volume on May 27, 2026, while Seven Seas Entertainment handles the English edition and published Volume 8 on July 28.
The franchise has already expanded beyond manga. A live action adaptation premiered on DMM TV in February 2025, followed by a second season on September 17, 2026. Wakabayashi is also known for Tsuredure Children, another manga that eventually received its own television anime adaptation in 2017. With Happy Kanako's Killer Life now preparing for its anime debut, the creator's unconventional mix of comedy and character-driven storytelling is set to reach an even wider audience.
