Sony has stepped in to bring an ambitious fan-created multiplayer project for The Last of Us Part II Remastered to an end. The unofficial PC mod, developed by creator Speclizer, was expected to launch publicly later this month after several months of work. However, the developer revealed that a formal request had been received on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment asking for development to stop. Speclizer confirmed that the request would be respected and has now decided to focus on creating an original game instead.

Development of the multiplayer experience reportedly began in January 2026, with the objective of transforming elements of The Last of Us Part II into a competitive online mode. The project was designed around 4v4 matches and was expected to feature matchmaking, customizable loadouts, online rankings and dedicated multiplayer maps inspired by environments from the original campaign.

The mod had already made significant technical progress before its cancellation. Earlier versions were limited to basic 1v1 sessions, but footage released in July demonstrated matches involving as many as eight players simultaneously. Speclizer had also been studying the animation systems developed by Naughty Dog in an effort to synchronize character movements more convincingly during online play and deliver an experience closer to the visual quality of the original game.

Sony has not publicly detailed the reasons behind its intervention. The project had received financial support through Speclizer's Patreon, although there is currently no confirmation that monetization influenced the decision. The cancellation nevertheless carries additional weight for The Last of Us community. Naughty Dog abandoned its own standalone The Last of Us Online project in 2023, leaving fans without an official multiplayer successor. For a brief period, this fan project appeared capable of filling that gap, but those hopes have now come to an end.
