Japanese gaming legend Shigeru Miyamoto has reached another historic milestone in his career. The Nintendo veteran, widely recognized for creating some of the most influential franchises in video game history, has been selected to receive Japan's prestigious Order of Culture. Announced by the country's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology on October 22, 2026, the distinction makes Miyamoto the first figure from the video game industry to earn this national honor. The award recognizes individuals whose achievements have made an exceptional contribution to Japanese culture.
The official ceremony will take place on November 3, Japan's Culture Day, with the Emperor personally presenting the decoration. Speaking during a press conference at Nintendo's headquarters in Kyoto, Miyamoto emphasized the collaborative nature of game development, explaining that the recognition also belongs to the many talented individuals who have worked alongside him throughout his career. Renowned composer Shunichi Tokura, whose musical contributions include several well-known anime productions such as Devilman and GUNxSWORD, is also among this year's eight recipients.
Miyamoto's influence on the gaming industry spans several decades and generations of Nintendo hardware. His creative vision helped establish iconic franchises such as Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Pikmin and Star Fox, many of which continue to shape the company's identity today. Beyond game development, he also played an important role in defining the concept behind the Nintendo Wii, a console that introduced motion-based gaming to a much broader audience. Miyamoto currently serves as Representative Director and Creative Fellow at Nintendo, maintaining a prominent position within the company's creative leadership.
This latest recognition adds to an already remarkable collection of international distinctions. In 2012, Miyamoto received Spain's Prince of Asturias Award for Communications and Humanities, followed by Japan's Person of Cultural Merit designation in 2019. His selection for the Order of Culture represents another significant moment for the video game industry, highlighting the growing recognition of interactive entertainment as an important form of cultural and artistic expression.
