Sony Pictures’ new Resident Evil live action reboot has made an impressive entrance at the U.S. box office, claiming the number one position during its opening weekend with an estimated $60 million in domestic revenue. The film started strongly with approximately $26.55 million on Friday, followed by $20.25 million on Saturday and $13.2 million on Sunday. Its performance was equally notable internationally, where the movie generated around $48.3 million, bringing its estimated worldwide total to $108.3 million after its first weekend in theaters.

The production marks another major cinematic chapter for Capcom’s iconic survival horror franchise. Directed by Zach Cregger, known for Barbarian and Weapons, the movie stars Austin Abrams as Bryan, alongside Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser. Cregger also co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten. Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions produced the project, with Robert Kulzer, Roy Lee, Miri Yoon and representatives from PlayStation Productions involved in the production. Cinematographer Dariusz Wolski handled the film’s visual direction.

This latest adaptation becomes the eighth live action Resident Evil movie released under Sony Pictures. The franchise previously featured six films starring Milla Jovovich between 2002 and 2017, before receiving its first cinematic reboot with Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City in 2021. The series has also continued through animation, including Resident Evil: Death Island in 2023. The new movie is scheduled to arrive in Japanese theaters on October 9.

Resident Evil is also enjoying significant momentum in the gaming market. Resident Evil Requiem, released on February 27 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, has surpassed six million copies sold worldwide, reaching the milestone faster than any previous entry in the series. Elsewhere at the U.S. box office, the 40th anniversary 4K re-release of The Transformers: The Movie ranked eighth during the weekend, taking its total earnings from the new theatrical run to approximately $4.16 million.
