The fantasy anime The Cat and the Dragon is officially returning for a second season in 2027. The announcement was made immediately after the conclusion of the first season in Japan, confirming that the unusual adventures of Nekoryū and his feline family are far from over. Crunchyroll has also confirmed that it will stream the upcoming season, although a precise release window and episode count have yet to be revealed.
Based on Amara's Neko to Ryū novels, the story follows a fire-breathing dragon who loses his parents before he is even born. His life takes an unexpected turn when a mother cat discovers him in the forest and raises him alongside her kittens. Despite his wings, impressive size and ability to breathe fire, the family simply considers him a slightly unusual cat. As he grows older, the dragon chooses to remain in the forest to protect the cats who accepted him, eventually earning the affectionate nickname "winged uncle."
The first season featured an extensive voice cast led by Takehito Koyasu as Nekoryū and Kikuko Inoue as Mama-nyan, alongside Fūka Izumi, Show Hayami, Noriaki Sugiyama, Maki Kawase, Atsumi Tanezaki and Junya Enoki. Produced by OLM, the anime was directed by Jin-Koo Oh, with Mitsutaka Hirota overseeing the scripts and Rie Nishino and Chiaki Kurakazu handling the character designs. Takahiro Obata composed the soundtrack, while Noriyoshi Konuma served as sound director.
The franchise has been active for more than a decade. Amara originally launched the story on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō platform in September 2013, before Takarajimasha began publishing the light novel edition in 2016 with illustrations by Mai Ōkuma. Nine volumes had been released by November 2025, with more than 1.4 million copies in circulation. A manga adaptation illustrated by Izumi Sasaki followed in 2017 and has since reached 13 collected volumes. With a second anime season now confirmed, The Cat and the Dragon will continue expanding its warm and unconventional fantasy universe in 2027.
