The world of Bocchi the Rock! is heading back to cinemas with a brand-new animated feature scheduled for release in Japan in 2027. Officially titled Eiga Bocchi the Rock! Hoshi no Ashiato (Bocchi the Rock! the Movie: Footprints of the Stars), the project was unveiled alongside its first teaser trailer. Unlike the franchise's previous theatrical releases, which revisited episodes from the television series, this upcoming film will adapt additional material from Aki Hamaji's original manga. Its story draws inspiration from Hoshi ni Tamukeru Ai no Hana, a special chapter included at the end of Volume 5 that explores the background of Seika Ijichi, the older sister of Nijika Ijichi.
CloverWorks will oversee animation production, with Shin Wakabayashi, known for his work on Wonder Egg Priority, taking the director's chair. Erika Yoshida, who previously contributed to the television adaptation, returns to handle the screenplay. Character designs will be created by Yukiko Horiguchi, whose portfolio includes K-ON!, Lucky Star, and Tamako Market. The production also brings together several experienced industry professionals, including art director Yuki Funagakure, cinematography director Yūya Sakuma, and sound director Akiko Fujita.
The announcement marks another major expansion for a franchise that has continued to grow since its television debut in October 2022. The original anime follows Hitori Goto, an exceptionally shy teenage guitarist who struggles with social interactions despite her musical talent. Her life begins to change when she meets Nijika Ijichi and joins Kessoku Band, opening the door to friendships, live performances, and personal challenges. A second television season was officially announced in February 2025, with Yūsuke Yamamoto taking over directing duties from Keiichirō Saitō.
Originally launched in December 2017 in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara Max magazine, Bocchi the Rock! has also enjoyed success on the big screen. Two compilation films, Bocchi the Rock! Re: and Bocchi the Rock! Re:Re:, arrived in Japanese theaters in June and August 2024, respectively. The first earned approximately 218 million yen during its opening three days. With a new film focusing on Seika's past and a second anime season already confirmed, the franchise has several projects ahead. Further information about the movie's exact premiere date and international distribution remains unavailable.
