The legendary Space Battleship Yamato franchise is preparing for another major journey with a brand-new feature-length anime film titled Cosmoship Yamato √2199. Announced on October 6, 2026, the project will place Hideaki Anno at the center of production as planner, executive producer and director. Yutaka Izubuchi will join him as co-director, while Production I.G and Studio Color will handle the animation. The collaboration brings together several major figures and studios closely associated with modern Japanese animation.
The announcement carries particular significance for the franchise, as it was revealed exactly 52 years after the original Space Battleship Yamato television series first aired in Japan on October 6, 1974. The iconic science-fiction saga follows the crew of the Yamato as they embark on a desperate voyage across space, with the survival of humanity resting on the success of their mission. Over the decades, the franchise has become one of the most influential works in Japanese science-fiction animation.
Anno has repeatedly cited Space Battleship Yamato as an important influence on his career and previously participated in the franchise's 50th-anniversary project launched in 2024. The filmmaker is widely known for creating Neon Genesis Evangelion and for his involvement in projects such as Shin Godzilla and the Rebuild of Evangelion film series. Izubuchi also has extensive experience with Yamato, having served as chief director and screenwriter on Space Battleship Yamato 2199.
The first teaser visual for Cosmoship Yamato √2199 has already been unveiled. It depicts the Yamato preparing to leave a devastated Earth and begin another voyage into deep space. Further information regarding the film's story, voice cast and theatrical release date has not yet been announced.
