Sony's PlayStation 5 is approaching a major commercial milestone, with worldwide shipments reaching 97.9 million units. The latest figures, published on November 5, 2026, as part of the company's financial report for the quarter ending September 30, reveal that the console remains a significant contributor to Sony's gaming business. During the first half of the current fiscal year, Sony shipped 4.2 million PS5 consoles, including 2.6 million units between July and September. These results bring the platform closer to the symbolic 100-million-unit mark, nearly six years after its original release.

Since its debut in November 2020, the PlayStation 5 has experienced substantial growth across international markets. The system initially reached 10 million sales in July 2021, followed by 20 million units in June 2022 and 30 million in January 2023. Its momentum continued throughout the following years, surpassing 50 million sales in December 2023 and reaching more than 80 million shipments by August 2025. By February 2026, cumulative shipments had exceeded 90 million units. Sony has also expanded the PS5 family through hardware revisions, including a more compact model introduced in 2023 and the PlayStation 5 Pro, released in November 2024 with enhanced graphical capabilities, advanced ray tracing, AI-powered image upscaling through PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, and 2TB of SSD storage.

Alongside these hardware developments, Sony has introduced several changes to its pricing and distribution strategy. On April 2, 2026, the company increased the prices of the standard PS5, Digital Edition, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal, citing ongoing economic pressures. Selected regions also experienced higher PlayStation Plus subscription prices for new customers beginning May 20. Another major change is scheduled for January 2028, when Sony plans to discontinue physical disc production for newly released PlayStation games. Titles launched from that date onward will be distributed digitally, while previously released games and those arriving before the deadline will remain unaffected.

Sony has also continued adjusting its hardware offerings for individual markets. In November 2025, the company introduced a Japan-exclusive PS5 Digital Edition limited to Japanese-language support, priced at 55,000 yen compared with 72,980 yen for the standard multilingual Digital Edition available in the country. With cumulative shipments now standing at 97.9 million units, the PlayStation 5 needs approximately 2.1 million additional shipments to reach the 100-million milestone, marking another important chapter in the console's commercial history.
