The long-awaited Hollywood adaptation of Naruto is moving closer to becoming a reality, with a major development bringing new momentum to the project. According to a November 3 report from The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has reached an agreement to co-finance Lionsgate's upcoming live action film and oversee its international distribution. The arrangement reportedly follows a competitive bidding process involving several major studios. More importantly, the production has received approval to move forward, with filming currently scheduled to begin in spring 2027.

Destin Daniel Cretton, known for directing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is attached to direct the adaptation. He will also serve as a producer through his company Hisako, alongside Jeyun Munford. Additional producers include Avi Arad, Ari Arad, Emmy Yu and Jeremy Latcham. Meanwhile, the search for the film's central cast is underway. An international casting campaign was announced in July 2026 to find actors for Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno. Charles Melton, recognized for his performances in Riverdale and Beef, was also reported to be in advanced negotiations for the role of Kakashi Hatake, although his participation has not been officially confirmed.

The project has experienced an unusually lengthy development process since Lionsgate acquired the adaptation rights in 2015. Over the years, several filmmakers and screenwriters have been associated with the movie, including Michael Gracey and writers Jon and Erich Hoeber. Tasha Huo was subsequently reported to be working on the screenplay in 2023, while Cretton's involvement as director was announced in February 2024. Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto has also been associated with the adaptation since its earlier development stages, although the full extent of his current involvement remains unclear.

Originally introduced in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1999, Naruto has grown into one of Japan's most recognizable entertainment franchises. Masashi Kishimoto's manga concluded in 2014, leaving behind a legacy that includes Naruto Shippuden, Boruto, animated films, novels and numerous video games. The franchise is also preparing to expand its manga universe with a new title, Naruto Shadow Rising. With Sony now participating in the Hollywood adaptation and production potentially beginning in 2027, attention is turning toward the official cast announcements and the first details of how the beloved ninja universe will be recreated for the big screen.
