The King of the Monsters has made a spectacular return to Japanese cinemas. Godzilla Minus Zero, the latest installment directed by Takashi Yamazaki, has established a new opening-day box office record for a live action film in Japan. According to figures released by TOHO on November 4, the movie attracted approximately 590,000 moviegoers and generated 910 million yen, equivalent to roughly $5.75 million, during its first day in theaters. This achievement places the production ahead of every previous domestic and international live action release in the Japanese market.
The film premiered on November 3, 2026, a date celebrated annually as Godzilla Day in recognition of the original monster movie's debut in 1954. Its opening-day revenue surpassed that of Godzilla Minus One by an impressive 201%, highlighting the commercial momentum surrounding the franchise. Set in 1949, the story unfolds two years after the events of its predecessor. Several familiar faces return, including Ryūnosuke Kamiki as Koichi Shikishima, Minami Hamabe as Noriko Ōishi, and Hidetaka Yoshioka as Noda. Newcomer Min Tanaka joins the cast as biologist Kanji Murakami, introducing another character into the franchise's postwar setting.
Takashi Yamazaki once again oversees the project as director, screenwriter, and visual effects supervisor, with Shirogumi handling the visual effects and Naoki Satō returning to compose the soundtrack. The production also marks a technical milestone as the first Japanese feature to qualify for the "Filmed for IMAX" designation. Its international rollout is particularly ambitious, with GKIDS and TOHO scheduling a North American release for November 6. For the first time in the franchise's Japanese productions, audiences in Japan and North America will receive a Godzilla movie during the same week. Releases across Europe, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand are also planned within that period.
The enormous expectations surrounding Godzilla Minus Zero follow the remarkable achievements of Godzilla Minus One, which accumulated more than $116 million worldwide and earned the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 2024. That victory represented a historic first for a Japanese production in the category. With its record-breaking Japanese debut and extensive international distribution strategy, the new film is positioned to become another major theatrical success for TOHO. Its upcoming overseas performance will determine whether this latest chapter can eventually surpass the worldwide box office achievements of its predecessor.
