Takashi Miike is back with another explosive project, and the latest trailer for Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo makes it clear that the Japanese filmmaker has no intention of slowing down. Set to premiere as a Special Presentation at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, the movie brings the Bad Lieutenant franchise to Tokyo for a new standalone story packed with crime, corruption, violence and Miike's trademark eccentricity.

Shun Oguri leads the cast as a disgraced Tokyo detective whose gambling addiction and questionable methods pull him deeper into the criminal underworld. His investigation becomes increasingly dangerous when he joins forces with an enigmatic FBI agent, played by Lily James, to search for the missing daughter of a powerful American family. Their case also brings them into conflict with a former Yakuza seeking revenge, while a mysterious killer appears to be following their every move.

The new Japanese trailer embraces the film's chaotic personality, shifting between brutal confrontations, dark comedy and deliberately absurd moments. It even features an original "Bad Lieutenant" song created specifically for the movie, giving the footage an unusual musical identity. The supporting cast includes Liv Morgan, Shotaro Mamiya, Jun Kunimura, Hiroshi Tachi and Nanase Nishino.

Written by Daisuke Tengan, Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo follows Abel Ferrara's original Bad Lieutenant and Werner Herzog's 2009 Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, while telling an independent story rather than functioning as a direct continuation. The film is expected to reach Japanese cinemas later in 2026, with Neon handling its upcoming US release.
