The upcoming anime adaptation of Hirayasumi is taking shape ahead of its Japanese debut, with Viz Media unveiling a fresh teaser, a new key visual and the principal voice cast. Based on Keigo Shinzō's acclaimed slice-of-life manga, the series is being produced through a collaboration involving Viz Media, Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions and animation studio Production +h. The anime is currently scheduled to premiere in Japan in January 2027 on NHK General, while Viz Media has also confirmed an international release window for 2027.
Yūma Uchida will lead the cast as Hiroto Ikuta, alongside Mayu Takahashi as Natsumi Kobayashi and Rikako Aikawa as Hanae Wada. At the center of the story is 29-year-old Hiroto, a man with no permanent job, no romantic relationship and very little interest in building the kind of future society expects from him. Despite that unconventional lifestyle, he appears genuinely content. Through Hiroto and the people around him, Hirayasumi explores adulthood, uncertainty, grief and the everyday search for happiness with a calm and deeply human approach.
Production +h. is handling the animation, with Kei Suezawa directing the series. Naoyuki Asano is responsible for character designs, while Mika Nishimura serves as art director. The soundtrack is being composed by Kaori Sawada. Fans in the United States will also get an early opportunity to discover the adaptation, as the first episode is set to receive its world premiere at Japan Society in New York City on October 7. Sawada and producer Junichi Katsutani are expected to attend the event.
The original Hirayasumi manga began serialization in Shogakukan's Weekly Big Comic Spirits in April 2021 and has since surpassed 1.1 million copies in circulation worldwide. The series has earned several industry nominations and has steadily built an international following. It also inspired a live action television adaptation that premiered on NHK in November 2025, further expanding the reach of Keigo Shinzō's contemplative story.
