The legendary cyberpunk franchise Ghost in the Shell is preparing for another chapter, with a brand-new anime project officially entering production. Japanese animation studio Science SARU has been confirmed as the company behind this upcoming adaptation of Masamune Shirow's influential manga. The announcement surfaced through promotional flyers distributed during a press preview of the OPEN HOUSE exhibition at DOVER STREET MARKET GINZA in Tokyo on October 24, 2026. A new promotional visual was also unveiled to mark the beginning of production, although a release date and further details about the creative team remain undisclosed.
Originally introduced in 1989 through Kodansha's Young Magazine, Ghost in the Shell has established itself as one of the most recognizable properties in science fiction and Japanese animation. Its exploration of artificial intelligence, cybernetic enhancement and human identity has influenced generations of creators. The franchise achieved international recognition through Mamoru Oshii's acclaimed 1995 animated film, before expanding into several television anime adaptations and a Hollywood live action production. With Science SARU now involved, the upcoming project represents another opportunity to reinterpret this iconic universe for modern audiences.
Set in a technologically advanced vision of Japan in 2029, the original narrative follows Motoko Kusanagi, a highly skilled cyborg operative leading a specialized combat team. Alongside Batou and other elite personnel, she becomes part of Public Security Section 9, a tactical organization established to investigate dangerous cybercriminal activities and threats to national security. As the team navigates a world dominated by interconnected digital networks, its investigations uncover increasingly sophisticated conspiracies involving powerful organizations and mysterious individuals.
One of the franchise's most compelling mysteries revolves around the Puppet Master, an elusive hacker whose activities challenge conventional understandings of consciousness, technology and personal identity. These themes have helped Ghost in the Shell maintain its relevance throughout decades of technological change. While the precise storyline and format of Science SARU's new adaptation have yet to be detailed, the announcement marks another significant development for a franchise that continues to occupy an important place in cyberpunk entertainment.
