Squadron 42 has taken another important step toward its long-awaited release, with Cloud Imperium Games officially launching a Steam page for its ambitious single-player title. Players can now add the game to their wishlist, although no exact release date or pre-order option is currently available. The studio is targeting the second quarter of 2027, pushing the project beyond the previously discussed 2026 window. Its arrival on Valve's platform also gives Squadron 42 significantly greater visibility outside the existing Star Citizen community.
Unlike Star Citizen and its persistent multiplayer universe, Squadron 42 has been designed as a cinematic, story-driven solo experience. Set in the year 2945, the campaign places players in the role of a newly recruited member of the United Empire of Earth Navy during an escalating galactic conflict. Humanity is facing pressure from both extraterrestrial forces and hostile human factions, providing the backdrop for a campaign expected to combine space combat, ground-based firefights, exploration and large-scale military encounters. Cloud Imperium Games has also highlighted interactive cinematic sequences and relationships aboard the player's capital ship, with choices intended to influence parts of the experience.
Another major aspect of the project is its extensive Hollywood cast. Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Henry Cavill, Andy Serkis, Mark Strong, Ben Mendelsohn, Jonathan Bailey, Jane Perry, John Rhys-Davies and Alix Wilton Regan are among the actors involved. According to Cloud Imperium Games, their performances have been incorporated directly into the gameplay rather than being restricted to traditional cinematic sequences. The studio says the campaign can now be played from beginning to end and remains in its final stage of development, with more than 40 hours of content expected.
Squadron 42 has been in development since the original Star Citizen crowdfunding campaign launched in 2012, making it one of the industry's most closely followed long-term projects. Chris Roberts has indicated that the revised schedule is partly intended to avoid an exceptionally crowded release calendar, including the launch period surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI. Meanwhile, the wider Star Citizen project has surpassed $1 billion in crowdfunding from more than 6.5 million contributors, according to Cloud Imperium Games. The Steam listing therefore represents a significant milestone, but after years of delays and changing release targets, the game's eventual launch will remain under particularly close scrutiny.
