Sony has just reached a new milestone with the PlayStation 5: in its consolidated financial results for the third fiscal quarter ended December 31, the manufacturer announced 92.1 million units shipped worldwide. During the period from October 1 to December 31, 8 million consoles left distribution channels, a solid pace that confirms the longevity of the machine despite a more mature market and consistently active competition.

The progress remains impressive over time. The PS5 had surpassed 80 million units shipped in August 2025, after crossing the 50 million mark in December 2023. Sony had already highlighted a record trajectory: more than 10 million sold by July 2021 (the fastest console in PlayStation history), followed by 20 million in June 2022, 30 million in January 2023 and 40 million in July 2023. Launched in November 2020, the PS5 was also refreshed with a more compact model released in late 2023.

As for the lineup, Sony strengthened its offering with the PS5 Pro shipped from November 2024, highlighting PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, 120 FPS, advanced ray tracing, 2 TB SSD, an improved GPU and AI-powered upscaling. The manufacturer has also adjusted its pricing strategy: a price increase in the United States last year, adjustments in certain markets in April 2025, and an increase in Japan as early as September 2024. Finally, there is a Japanese edition of the PS5 Digital Edition limited to the local language and offered at a lower price. No live-action adaptation or remake here: just a console that continues to set its own pace.
