In a trend that still surprises part of the community, PlayStation is achieving monumental results thanks to the gradual arrival of its exclusives on PC. A recent report published on November 21 by Alinea Analytics claims that Sony has generated more than $1.5 billion through Steam, for an estimated net profit of $1.2 billion, driven in particular by the monumental success of Helldivers 2, which generated $400 million on its own after a meteoric launch that surpassed 12 million copies sold in just 12 weeks. Although still measured, this multiplatform approach shows that Sony is banking on PS5/PC complementarity to expand its audience without sacrificing the PlayStation identity.
However, success is not limited to live-service games. On Steam, the solo titles Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Days Gone and Spider-Man make up the rest of the PlayStation top sellers, showing that PC audiences are highly receptive to narrative adventures that were once exclusive. At the same time, Microsoft is proving that this strategy can work in both directions: Forza Horizon 5 generated $100 million on PS5 alone, and at the end of 2024, PlayStation players accounted for 64% of global spending on published Xbox games. In a context where console sales are stagnating, multiplatform expansion is becoming fertile ground for both giants.
Yet despite this impressive record, rumors suggest that Sony could slow the pace of PC ports for its major solo franchises. The report highlights that sequels sell significantly less: God of War Ragnarok sold only a small fraction of the first God of War’s sales on Steam, while Spider-Man 2 reached only half the results of its predecessor. Thus, even if the future of these ports remains uncertain, the experience accumulated over several years shows that Sony’s PC strategy has been highly profitable and could continue to influence how the industry views the boundaries between platforms.
