The popular action webtoon Teenage Mercenary is officially heading to television in 2027, with J.C. Staff taking charge of the animation. Crunchyroll revealed new information about the project during New York Comic Con on October 8, 2026, confirming several major members of the production team. Manabu Ono, known for his work on Sword Art Online: Alicization and Dead Mount Death Play, will direct the series while also supervising its scripts. Character designs are being handled by Koji Haneda, while acclaimed composer Hiroyuki Sawano, whose credits include Attack on Titan and The Seven Deadly Sins, will create the soundtrack. HAYATE is producing the project.

Teenage Mercenary follows Yu Ijin, known as Sōma Tatewaki in the Japanese version. After losing his parents in a plane crash at the age of eight, Ijin is stranded in a foreign country and forced to survive as a child mercenary. Ten years later, he finally returns to Korea and reunites with his family. However, adapting to an ordinary teenage life proves to be anything but simple. With only one year of high school remaining, the combat-hardened protagonist must navigate bullying, rivalries and everyday school problems using skills developed under circumstances far removed from those of a typical student.

Created by YC with artwork by Rakyeon, the series began publication on Naver Webtoon in South Korea in November 2020. It expanded to Japan through LINE Manga in April 2021, followed by an English release through WEBTOON in June of the same year. Its popularity has continued to grow considerably, surpassing 730 million views in Japan by May 2025 and taking first place in LINE Manga's annual rankings in both 2023 and 2024.

The webtoon has since developed into a major international title, with distribution available in 10 languages. By September 2026, Teenage Mercenary had accumulated more than 2.84 billion views worldwide. With J.C. Staff leading the animation and a production team featuring several established anime creators, the 2027 adaptation will bring Ijin's transition from mercenary life to the considerably different battleground of high school to the screen.
