Toei Animation is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a special video looking back at several decades of history and landmark productions. Officially founded under this name on July 31, 1956, the Japanese studio used the anniversary to look back on its evolution, decade by decade, through a selection of its most notable works. The video highlights several generations of anime that have become essential viewing, while also illustrating the studio’s artistic and technical development since its beginnings.

At the same time, Toei Animation launched a website dedicated to its 70th anniversary, bringing together a detailed timeline of its productions and a message from its president, Katsuhiro Takagi. He thanks the studio’s employees, pioneers, fans and various partners who contributed to its development. The executive also regards this milestone as another step toward Toei Animation’s centenary and states the group’s intention to continue investing in new projects for international audiences.

The studio’s history notably dates back to The White Snake, its first animated feature film, released in 1958, followed by Magic Boy in 1959. Toei Animation then entered television with Ōkami Shōnen Ken in 1963. Over the decades, the studio has participated in the creation of many major Japanese animation franchises, including Dragon Ball, One Piece, Precure, Mazinger Z, Sailor Moon, Saint Seiya, Digimon, Slam Dunk, Fist of the North Star, Galaxy Express 999, Cutie Honey and GeGeGe no Kitarō.

Seventy years after its beginnings, Toei Animation remains associated with some of the anime industry’s most popular franchises. Its catalog is also continuing to expand with new productions, including Star Detective Precure!, a TV series launched in 2026 and presented as its most recent production at the time of this anniversary.
