NBA 2K25 is entering the final stage of its life cycle, with 2K confirming that the game's online services will permanently close at the beginning of 2027. The title will first be removed from digital storefronts on October 30, 2026, preventing new purchases after that date. Existing owners will still be able to download the game again, but the major change arrives on January 1, 2027, when every feature relying on 2K's servers will become inaccessible.
The shutdown will significantly reduce what players can do in NBA 2K25. MyCAREER and MyTEAM will no longer function, while multiplayer, Online Leagues, community sharing and other connected services will also disappear. Players will no longer be able to earn Virtual Currency through the game once the servers are taken offline. Several offline components will remain available, including Play Now, MyNBA, The W and MyWNBA, meaning owners will still have access to a portion of the experience after online support ends.
NBA 2K25 launched to relatively positive critical reviews, earning a Metascore of 79 based on 41 reviews. Player feedback has been considerably more divided, with its Metacritic user score sitting at 4.8 from more than 260 ratings. Criticism has frequently focused on elements such as shooting mechanics, technical issues, gameplay changes and the heavy presence of online systems, although the game's presentation and overall amount of content have also received praise.
The closure once again highlights the dependence of modern sports games on publisher-operated infrastructure. NBA 2K25 will technically remain playable after January 1, but a substantial part of its content will disappear permanently. Players who still want to use its online modes therefore have until December 31, 2026 before those services are switched off for good.
