The highly anticipated new animated film adapted from Riyoko Ikeda’s classic manga, The Rose of Versailles, has unveiled its second trailer and an impressive new visual. This teaser not only introduced the talented cast and creative team behind the project, but also announced that the film will be released in early 2025. The English translation of the teaser mentions a release in “early spring,” although the original Japanese text suggests a release around the New Year period.

The star-studded cast includes Miyuki Sawashiro as Oscar François de Jarjayes, Aya Hirano as Marie Antoinette, Toshiyuki Toyonaga as André Grandier, and Kazuki Katō as Hans Axel von Fersen. The film is directed by Ai Yoshimura, known for works such as Daily Lives of High School Boys and My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, and is produced by MAPPA. The screenplay is written by Tomoko Komparu, while the character designs are by Mariko Oka. The soundtrack will be composed by Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto, both renowned for their contributions to series such as Attack on Titan and Blue Exorcist.

As described by the team, the film’s story centers on Oscar François de Jarjayes, who, although raised as the son and heir of a family of generals, lives as a woman disguised as a man. It also features Marie Antoinette, arriving from Austria to become the queen of France, along with other central characters such as André Grandier, Oscar’s loyal servant, and the dashing Swedish count Hans Axel von Fersen. Set in the lavish court of Versailles at the end of the 18th century, the story explores their intertwined fates amid the upheaval of the French Revolution. The original manga was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Margaret magazine from 1972 to 1973, and remains a beloved tale of love and destiny.
