Microsoft now appears to be actively preparing for a future Xbox without physical media support. Starting August 31, 2026, members of the Xbox Insiders program will be able to test Xbox Disc-to-Digital, a new feature designed to link disc-based games to a user account. This initiative confirms that Microsoft is indeed considering consoles without optical drives in the long term, while seeking to preserve access to the millions of physical games already owned by players.
The system is based on identifying the disc inserted into the console. Each compatible copy would have an identifier allowing the system to recognize it individually. After installation, this identifier would be linked to the user's Xbox account, granting access to the game without permanently depending on a console model equipped with a disc drive. However, some titles may not be compatible with this system.
Microsoft has reportedly also planned for resale and lending. If the disc is subsequently installed on a console associated with another user, its Disc-to-Digital license would be transferred to the new account and deactivated for the previous owner. No particular limitation on the number of ownership changes appears to be planned at this time, which would help preserve part of the second-hand market.
In the longer term, Disc-to-Digital could primarily prepare the way for an entirely digital Xbox generation. Rather than an abrupt disappearance of physical media, Microsoft appears to want to organize a transition period that would allow players to continue using their existing collections. For those who sometimes own dozens, or even hundreds, of boxed games, this approach could represent an important compromise between the gradual disappearance of discs and the preservation of backward compatibility.
