Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed in an announcement published on the official PlayStation Blog on July 1, 2026, that it will stop producing physical discs for new games intended for PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028. After that date, new releases will be offered exclusively in digital format, both through the PlayStation Store and partner retailers.

According to Sony, this decision reflects the evolution of players’ consumption habits, which are increasingly shifting toward downloads and digital libraries. Sony says it wants to support this gradual market transition, as digital entertainment continues to occupy an increasingly important place compared with traditional physical media.

The company nevertheless specifies that this measure will not apply to games already released in disc format, or to those released before January 2028 with a physical edition. Players attached to boxed copies and physical collections will therefore be able to continue buying and using these titles, within the limits of productions already planned.

With this strategic shift, PlayStation intends to focus its resources on improving access to games while maintaining several purchasing options through physical stores and the PlayStation Store. Sony also reaffirms its commitment to offering its community a first-class gaming experience while adapting its model to the sector’s new practices.
