The Pokémon Company has announced Pokémon: Wild Card, a brand-new animated feature film inspired by the Pokémon Trading Card Game, scheduled for release in 2027. The project was officially unveiled at the Pokémon World Championships 2026, held in San Francisco. A first teaser and promotional artwork were also presented. The film will mark Pokémon’s return to theaters with a new animated production, seven years after the franchise’s previous feature film.
Unlike the adventures traditionally centered on battles between Pokémon, Pokémon: Wild Card will place the trading card game at the heart of its story. The story will follow a Pokémon TCG player accompanied by their partner, Mimikyu. Together, they will face various challenges and put their skills to use when the time comes to play their cards in an attempt to achieve their goals.
The film will be directed by Katsuhiko Kitada, while Akemi Hayashi will be responsible for the character designs. The animation will be produced by CloverWorks, a studio particularly known for several major Japanese productions, with STORY inc. overseeing the project’s overall production.
At the moment, no specific release date or additional information about the characters or the full storyline has been announced. With its Pokémon TCG-centered approach and its duo consisting of a player and Mimikyu, Pokémon: Wild Card should nevertheless offer a new perspective on the Pokémon universe when it is released in 2027.
