Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have something to celebrate: a new story dedicated to Kya, the only daughter of Aang and Katara, has just been unveiled by Dark Horse Comics. The publisher shared the project’s first illustration on X, showing a young Kya crossing a desert beneath a starry sky. This prequel will tell the story of her early days outside Republic City, long before the events of The Legend of Korra, and will be created by Kiku Hughes and Diana Sousa and Alexandria Monik, who are already known for their work on other stories from the Avatar universe.

Few details are available so far, but this comic appears to aim to explore a lesser-known side of the character. In The Legend of Korra, Kya is presented as a talented, independent Waterbender with a strong personality, traits inherited from her parents. Tenzin, her brother, mentions that she spent a long time traveling to find herself and heal others, revealing a free-spirited and deeply kind personality. This new adventure could therefore fill in the gaps surrounding her adolescence and training.

Attentive readers may also remember her confidences in the comic series Turf Wars, where Kya discussed her difficulties accepting herself within the Water Tribe and her romantic past. The new remake therefore promises to develop this intimate dimension and show a heroine seeking balance between tradition and freedom. For now, neither the official title nor the release date has been announced, but this project is already shaping up to be a fine extension of the Avatar universe.
