In 2023, the anime production industry experienced notable growth of 22.9%, reaching a value of 339 billion yen, according to a report published by the company Teikoku Databank. This development is due to the stabilization of television productions, the rise of anime intended for streaming platforms, and the success of several animated films at the box office. For 2024, Teikoku Databank expects this value to remain around 340 billion yen, demonstrating stability in the sector despite growing competition.

Among the 317 animation companies studied, only 37.9% managed to remain profitable, while 24.9% saw their revenues decrease compared with the previous year. Studios focusing on primary contracts or subcontracted work recorded average sales of 2.363 billion yen, an increase over the previous year. By contrast, studios specializing in subcontracting reached an average of 391 million yen. These figures show a disparity in revenue depending on the type of work carried out by each studio.

The study also reveals that the majority of companies are small, with 93 companies employing five people or fewer. More than 89% of anime production companies are located in Tokyo, highlighting the importance of the Japanese capital as the hub of this industry. In addition, 116 companies were established in the 2010s, demonstrating recent momentum in business creation. The continued expansion and diversification of distribution channels are ensuring the continued growth of this key sector of Japan's cultural economy.
