Bandai Namco and studio Game Studio have just shared a new gameplay sequence from Echoes of Aincrad, an action RPG set in the universe of Sword Art Online. The video mainly highlights the heart of the experience: real-time battles designed to be fast-paced, readable, and increasingly complex as players progress through the deadly floors of Aincrad’s flying castle. The game embraces an “old-school” power progression system, with progression points earned at each level to enhance attributes in the style of a classic RPG. Endurance, strength, dexterity… the idea is to tailor your build to your playstyle. At the same time, players assemble their equipment from several weapons and armor pieces, with forging playing a central role: improving their protection and arsenal will be essential to withstand more damage and take down more powerful enemies. But survival is not simply about optimizing your gear. Echoes of Aincrad also emphasizes mastering two-person combat, thanks to a partner who fights alongside the player and responds to commands. The gameplay revolves around the Switch system, designed to alternate roles and chain attacks together fluidly, either by allowing the partner to act autonomously or by having them wait so the player can synchronize the offensive and distribute the damage. Each companion also has a unique Special Skill, encouraging tactical choices depending on the situation and precise execution of combos. Echoes of Aincrad is planned for PC (Steam), Xbox Series X|S, and PS5, with a worldwide release announced for July 9 or 10, 2026 depending on your time zone.
