Bungie’s famous looter-shooter, Destiny 2, is going through a difficult period, and this is clearly reflected in its Steam figures. Despite its remarkable longevity since launch, Destiny 2 is experiencing a collapse in its player base. Recent statistics indicate that the game reached its lowest 24-hour peak of concurrent players, with only a little over 30,000 users connected at the same time—a negative record since the title’s release. This trend confirms that the game’s appeal is waning, even though it had managed to maintain a loyal community for years.
Bungie’s difficulties are nothing new: its latest expansion, Edge of Fate, failed to generate the expected enthusiasm, and some recent gameplay changes were harshly criticized by the community, to the point that they were partially rolled back. Between July and September 2025, the number of players on Steam fell by nearly 80%, illustrating the fans’ growing weariness. At the same time, competition has intensified: Borderlands 4 is attracting many frustrated players, offering a similar alternative in style but one perceived as more refreshing in the face of the accumulated disappointments of Destiny 2.
The situation is all the more delicate because Bungie is facing other setbacks, notably with Marathon, which has been delayed indefinitely, further contributing to a tense internal atmosphere. Developers describe morale as being in free fall, and Destiny 2’s poor state is only making matters worse. Despite this, Sony still says it believes in its live-service strategy, banking on a future recovery.
