Nippon Sangoku: The Three Nations of the Crimson Sun is officially moving forward with another anime project. Producer Twin Engine has confirmed that a sequel is now in development, extending the television adaptation of Ikka Matsuki’s political and military manga. The announcement was accompanied by a promotional video built around scenes from the original series, although the studio has yet to reveal when the sequel will premiere or what form the new production will take.

The series depicts a Japan that has been reshaped by large-scale disasters, nuclear conflict and political collapse. With central authority gone, the country has split into three competing states, each attempting to dominate the others. Rather than following a conventional action hero, the story focuses on Aoteru Misumi, a former regional civil servant determined to reunite Japan. His greatest weapons are his strategic mind, encyclopedic knowledge and ability to influence those around him.

Studio Kafka is responsible for the anime, with Kazuaki Terasawa directing and Takahiko Abiru handling the character designs while also serving as chief animation director. Teruko Utsumi oversees the series scripts, Seiki Tamura leads the art department and acclaimed composer Kevin Penkin provides the soundtrack. The voice cast includes Kenshō Ono, Asami Seto, Takashi Nagasako, Jun Fukuyama, Yūichi Nakamura, Megumi Han and several other established performers.

The first anime launched internationally through Amazon Prime Video on April 5, 2026, reaching audiences across more than 240 countries and territories. Matsuki’s original manga began serialization in 2021 through Shogakukan’s Manga ONE application and Ura Sunday platform. The series has since appeared in several major Japanese manga rankings and was nominated for the Manga Taisho in 2023. With a continuation now secured, fans will be watching closely for information about the sequel’s schedule, production staff and returning cast.
