Before his death, Akira Toriyama was still active in creating artwork for his hometown. In particular, he designed a new commemorative logo for the 20th anniversary of the city of Kiyosu in Aichi Prefecture, scheduled for 2025. The illustration, depicting a samurai in a comedic style, pays tribute to the city’s history and recalls Toriyama’s beginnings as a comedic manga artist with works such as Dr. Slump and the original Dragon Ball series. His distinctive style, combining humor and adventure, has left its mark on several generations of fans around the world.

The Dragon Ball franchise is set to celebrate its 40th anniversary on November 20, 2024. Although Toriyama is no longer with us for this celebration, his influence will endure through the new animated series Dragon Ball Daima. According to a posthumous interview published by the Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2024, Toriyama had not initially planned to become involved in this new project. However, over time, he went on to contribute significantly to the series’ development, influencing the story, character designs and visual world of Dragon Ball Daima.
