LEGO has just made an announcement that will get Yu-Gi-Oh! fans excited: through LEGO Ideas, the brand is launching an official challenge inviting the community to create display models and dynamic dioramas inspired by two iconic arcs from Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters. The creations must be based on the Duelist Kingdom and Battle City tournaments, featuring duels, monsters and/or characters that actually appeared in these episodes, in order to capture the anime’s atmosphere as closely as possible.
As for the rules, LEGO is setting clear parameters: each submission must contain at least 400 pieces and no more than 2,000 pieces. The goal is clear: to encourage credible, detailed sets that can be produced on a large scale. These two sagas are among the franchise’s most iconic, introducing Yugi Mutou, the Millennium Puzzle and the spirit of Pharaoh Atem, while Duelist Kingdom begins the quest to save Yugi’s grandfather from Maximillion J. Pegasus, the creator of Duel Monsters.
As always with LEGO Ideas, a Yu-Gi-Oh! project will need to reach 10,000 votes to move on to “official review” and have a chance of becoming a real release. The timing is all the more exciting as the franchise is approaching its 30th anniversary (the manga launched in September 1996 in Weekly Shonen Jump by Kazuki Takahashi), while LEGO is already accelerating its move into anime, following One Piece sets featuring the Going Merry and the Baratie.
