Kadokawa has revealed exciting news for fans of Saka and Chorefuji's light novel series, Once Upon a Witch's Death: The Tale of the One Thousand Tears of Joy. The series, known in Japanese as Aru Majo ga Shinu Made: Owari no Kotoba to Hajimari no Namida, will be adapted into a television anime in 2025!
The anime will feature renowned voice actors Yoshino Aoyama and Yoshiko Sakakibara, who will lend their talents to the characters Meg Raspberry and Faust, respectively. Directed by Atsushi Nigorikawa, known for works such as A Destructive God Sits Next to Me, the anime will be produced by EMT Squared. Yuki Shizuku will adapt Chorefuji's original character designs, ensuring that the visuals remain faithful to the novels' beloved illustrations. In addition, Keiichirō Ōchi, renowned for his work on Adachi and Shimamura and The Quintessential Quintuplets, will oversee the series' scripts.
Yen Press, the English publisher of the novels, describes the moving story of Meg, a young apprentice witch who discovers that she has only one year left to live unless she can break a deadly curse by collecting tears of joy. Her journey, filled with encounters, farewells, and friendships, teaches her vital and bittersweet lessons about life. The story, which began on the Kakuyomu website in 2019 and concluded in 2022, will also see its manga adaptation continue, with new volumes set to be released soon.
